Verve Energy

Verve Energy, the biggest electricity supplier in WA, was created in April 2006 as part of the State government energy market reforms.

It competes against privately owned energy companies to provide a reliable electricity supply in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), an area bounded by Geraldton to the north, Kalgoorlie to the east and Albany to the south.

Verve Energy's vision is to create a leading business in the evolving West Australian energy market. Its mission is to embrace its new environment, maximise its value by matching its generating portfolio to market opportunities, drive improvements in service and cost through opportunities to renew and innovate, whilst providing a safe and rewarding workplace.

Verve Energy has five major power stations - Muja, Collie, Kwinana, Cockburn and Pinjar north of Perth and a number of smaller gas turbine-based power stations. Kwinana and Cockburn are located within the Kwinana Industrial Area. It also has wind farms at Albany and Esperance, and biomass and solar facilities.

Kwinana Power Station is unique in WA in that it can burn three fuels, coal, gas and oil. It consists of six generating units and a 20MW capacity gas turbine with a total generating capacity of 900MW.

Cockburn Power Station uses gas-fired combined-cycle technology and has a generating capacity of 240MW. Its thermal efficiency is better than 50% compared with less that 40% from the gas turbine operating on its own. Emissions of both greenhouse gases and pollutants are much lower than other thermal generators.
