Want to know how to be a 'gold medal' employee. Well, it has never been easier to be a winner in the employment race - all you have to do is...

Be positive (smiling helps)
Start the day off clean and tidy (would your mum approve?)
Turn up to work on time (you'll get used to it)
Show initiative - don't hang about idle (time will pass quickly too)
Ask questions (your employer will actually think you're smart)
Have a "To Do" list at the ready (have your mental filing cabinet ready)
Control the "sickies" (you'll feel much better about it)
Take responsibility for what you do or don't do (with every action comes a reaction...)
Show an interest (employers are usually proud of their business)
Have basic computer skills (now that should be easy for you)
Have communication skills-written and spoken (practice makes perfect)
Use a tone of voice, facial expression and generally act in a way that shows how mature you are (it's called body language)

RECRUITMENT - WHAT COMPANIES ARE LOOKING FOR

A confident person.
A person with an understanding of their company and the role they have applied for.
A person who appears to have drive and some aspirations.

Set yourself apart from other applicants:
Research – find out what is important for the company – their mission statement, their values – check out their website

Research – find out what the job is about – what sorts of tasks are involved – link these to your casual jobs, volunteer work, any sports you may play. For example, explain your understanding of safety at work; working in teams; commitment to training; commitment to learning, following instructions.

Always provide a covering letter:
Use similar language in your covering letter, that is outlined in the job information i.e. ‘the successful applicant will possess..’ link your school projects, casual work and sports and hobbies to what is required. For example, if they ask for some who is willing to work in a safe manner, then write about your experience with safe work practices at your current or past casual job.

Check your covering letter to make sure you include:

The correct company name.
A contact phone number.
Spelling is correct.
What you have already done, be it a casual job, units a TAFE while at school, hobbies, sports, other interests.
Why you are interested in the role.
What you want to achieve.

Portfolio
Start putting your portfolio together now. Don’t wait until the last minute or the night before your job interview. If you rush it, it will show.

Your portfolio can include:

References from casual jobs
Certificates you have obtained from school, courses, volunteer work, sport
Copy of your white card, first aid certificate, life saving certificates
Photos of projects and activities you have been involved in at school or work or sport or hobbies
Personal references – from coaches, teachers, employers,
