CH - Community Health Committee Program Vision

To have the Kwinana Industries Council seen by Government, the community and other stakeholders as a body with a high level of commitment to community health and as a reliable source of expertise and information on local health issues.

Program Objectives

To develop and maintain KIC members credibility on public health matters, and ensure KIC members are not impacting public health through emissions to air, water or land.
To increase understanding within the local community about the processes KIC members use in the monitoring and management of emissions.
To educate and promote industry related health and safety information within the local community.
To build trust and credibility on health issues by interacting effectively with government agencies, community groups and other stakeholders such as politicians, medical practitioners and health care professionals on local concerns and initiatives.
To increase knowledge and understanding of the way in which Industry seeks to manage emissions and potential health impacts. This is to produce a better informed public, workforce and government officialdom, to increase the likelihood of wise decisions being made and to produce an appreciation of the resource limitations and difficult choices that might be involved.

Current Projects

Health Studies

A top priority for Kwinana industry is to ensure the health of our workers. To this end there are a number of long-term studies into the health of workers, in particular cancer rates, in industry compared to the general population.

Healthwatch is a study for the oil industry in Australia, and is run by the University of Adelaide for the Australian Institute of Petroleum. The study has been running since 1980.

Healthwise is a joint study by Monash University and University of WA for Alcoa’s mining, refining and smelting operations in Australia. The study commenced in 1994.
