Alcoa World Alumina Australia
Alcoa has been sustainably mining, refining and smelting in Australia since 1961. Alcoa owns and operates the world’s largest integrated bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminium smelting system in Australia with alumina refineries at Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup. These three refineries have a combined capacity of 8.7 million tonnes of alumina, which accounts for around 47 per cent of Australia’s alumina and 13 per cent of total world demand. Alcoa employs over 4000 staff and contractors in Western Australia. In Victoria, Alcoa owns the Point Henry smelter and operates the Portland smelter, in which it has a 55% interest. The combined capacity of these two smelters is about 546,000 tonnes a year, with most of the aluminium ingot being exported. This represents 30% of Australia's aluminium production.
